Change IP

Oct 19, 2004 7:19AM PDT

I was wondering if I really need to change the IP address of my router. I just took the wireless networking class and this topic was in one of the lessons. The instructor gave an example of how easily someone can guees the ip address of a router.

I also want to know if I will still be able to use my PDA with Wi-fi if i turn MAC filtering on.

This is much like the mailbox in front of your house. Change the number and you won't get mail. Every web site you visit has that address because... you want the data delivered.

If I do change the IP of my router will it be like moving to a different house and getting a new mailbox number?

I'd leave it alone. The router's built in firewall blocks unsolicited inbound attempts. Add a software firewall like ZoneAlarm and that's it. In over a year with my D-link router and ZoneAlarm free I've never been hit.
