General discussion

change default version of program to open file

Feb 14, 2009 3:42AM PST

I have two versions of Word loaded on my computer. (2003; 2007) I want 2003 to be the default that opens when any .doc file is opened. When I try to change the default only "Word" is listed without mention of the version. Is there any way to do this without taking 2007 off the machine?

Let's try simple.

Put a shortcut to the old Word on your desktop.

Now drag and drop a .doc file onto that shortcut. Does it work?

Thanks for a reply. I will try that. I can also open word 2003 before I open a file. But what I'm trying to get around is where I don't remember to do those things and just double click on the file and oh no..... and I have to wait while Word 2007 slowly opens and then close it and start over.

Then you can use the associations or Open With and check off that box to always open with the old winword.

But you didn't complete the first step so I can't tell if that would work.

Good luck,

Oh...duh. Okay I tried and that doesn't work. Does that normally work? Anyway, thanks again.

What does not work?

This is why I took it step by step. If we made it past the first hurdle then we try the next.

Sorry, but I'll check in tomorrow to see if the first method worked.

I made a new shortcut and tried dragging docs to it and it doesn't open them. Nothing happens.

Tell me if the shortcut opens the old word.

Details matter. Sorry but you can save a lot of posts if you embellish just a little more.

Yes it is a real shortcut and it does open Word 2003 but drag and dropping documents does not work with it.

OK, that's progress.
