So far I've had good luck in asking for the French restore CDs if the laptop was bought in Canada. The rest of us get to pay for a new CD set.

About that torrent. We won't speak about it in these forums.

Hello - I do not know how the MS support works in France. In England, where I lived until some time ago, I could always get around the primary refusal to amend this or the other, PROVIDING there was proof of a legitimate purchase of XP. Just downloading a different version is no good. You have to do a fresh install from a CD in the language of your choice. And of course backup all the documents and data that you need, because depending on the CD you get you may have to format. Good luck - Amos.
