CF memory card appears empty to computer

Feb 17, 2010 9:33AM PST

I have a 2GB Compact Flash memory card. It is full of pictures that I can see and browse through while the card is in the camera.

But when I attach it to a card reader and attempt to view them on a computer the folder appears empty.

The computer has no problem reading the presence of a card and when I look at the card properties there is nearly 2GB worth of space used, suggesting that the files are there, just not being visible.

I've tried an antivirus scan and used a photo recovery programme. The latter saw 5 files, but there are - in the camera at least - hundreds on the card.

OS is Windows Vista Home Premium 2007 - but I've had the same problem on other machines with different versions (so far all Windows)

Any help would be much appreciated.

That is a new one on me.

I suggest you take the card to your local photo processing location and see if their equipment can see the files.

If so, have them put them on a CD for you.
(about $3 per CD at WalMart and WalGreen Pharmacy)

It could be helpful if we knew the make and model of the camera.

Luckily the advice above works about 99% of the time. After that I have to send it to drivesavers.com
