Question

Certain sites won't play videos w/out compatibility mode

by craigtheairplaneman / November 20, 2013 2:58 PM PST

Hi everyone:

Tonight out of nowhere (never an issue before) certain sites if I'm on Internet Explorer will not play videos unless I put "Compatibility Mode" on.

I have the latest version of Internet Explorer.

One of the websites was the New York Yankees I would think they would be pretty up to date on technology.

If the computer is Windows 7, Verizon Fios, Dual Core, with JAVA/FLASH updated why would this be an issue all of a sudden?

YouTube was fine.

Finally Internet Explorer gives you an option to put all sites in compatibility mode, pick the ones you wish, or non at all.

Why wouldn't everyone choose all?

Thank you for your time.

Hi Bob:

Wouldn't any browser want to always have an issue like that rectified? If for all these years there is no problem there has to be some fix.

What about the question of Compatibility Mode? If you are given a choice to have that on at all times why would somebody not use that as the default?

Is there any advantage to having Compatibility On?

Thank you,
CF

My answer is no.

Microsoft feels like they set the standard and we must follow. For me it's too easy to forget IE except for Windows Update or checking out claims that site xyz.com didn't work with IE.

The compat mode problem was pretty bad at first and has improved as sites catch up.

I don't know how long you've used Windows but that's a long discussion.

Hi Bob:

I use Internet Explorer/Firefox/Chrome.

Even though there are choices I still like to know the information and have things working.

The questions I am hoping you can answer is if Compatibility View worked on the website why no have it on all the time? Why does Internet Explorer give you a choice for on/off?

Is the issue in this case the website not having something up to date, Internet Explorer, my computer, or a combination?

Thank you,
Craig

For now you go with what works. I'm seeing a new computer user that wants to find out why things are the way they are and there's a lot of history and often it involves companies trying to set the standard.

Good questions but I'm going to answer with use what works.
Bob
