Cell phone switch starts today, with caveats

Nov 24, 2003 3:24AM PST
NEW YORK (AP) -- Phone company ads proclaimed "Bring your number up to speed" and "Your number on America's best wireless network" as new rules went into effect Monday letting consumers switch cell phone service without switching their phone numbers.

Critics, however, say the companies spent so much time and effort fighting to delay the new rules that their preparations may prove inadequate for the expected torrent of customers wanting to bring their cell numbers to a different wireless carrier.
