Celeron, Intel or AMD? What is better and what do I need?

May 28, 2004 2:30AM PDT

I am planning to upgrade my computer and I was wandering what I should buy. Im not into playing latest games. I just want a good coputer to play dvd and divx movies, edit wave sounds and browse internet. I know Intel pentium is the best but do I need that? What is the difference between other processors. Is the AMD or Celeron good enough?
Thanks

Yes. Somewhere about 1GHz, it all became a blur since above that point, DVD playback became a non-issue. Even today's games play well with a top notch video (and the usual memory and such complement.)

It's a vote with your pocket book.

a few comments, bear in mind that AMD chips go into motherboards designed for them, so you have to buy them in tandem. fyi, I use an AMD system and am quite happy with it.

If you aren't a serious gamer, and aren't doing heavy-duty graphics or sound/ video editing etc., you may find the added speed (and expense) beyond 1 Ghz of CPU speed to be unnecessary. Better to put the money into a faster (7200 rpm) hard drive and more memory. I think - fj
