Celebrities call for release of 'West Memphis Three'

May 13, 2006 10:12AM PDT

SAN FRANCISCO, California (AP) -- An art show featuring work by an Arkansas death row inmate opened this weekend to kick off a series of events this month advocating the release of three convicted killers whose cause has been championed by celebrities.

Damien Echols, 31, was one of three teenagers convicted in the 1993 bludgeoning deaths of three 8-year-old boys whose bodies were found in a ditch near their homes in West Memphis, Arkansas. The convicts became known as the "West Memphis Three."

Supporters claim Echols, Jessie Misskelley and Jason Baldwin, were railroaded because they listened to heavy metal, dressed in black clothing and read Stephen King novels. The case has become a cause celebre for a host of musicians and other big names, including Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder, punk rocker Henry Rollins and comedian Margaret Cho.

"I think America can do a little better for you than what they got, being thrown in prison on such intense charges with no physical evidence," said Rollins, who spoke at the art show on Friday. "This shouldn't happen in America."

Oh hum, just another "pile on" by some SE
May 15, 2006 7:55AM PDT

people who like to do so. And who says there is not such a wolf pack mentality around here.

Dave K. is not that uninformed, surely. It is apparent that he knows that 3 white boys were convicted of killing 3 white boys. What he is doing is making an analogy being CRITICAL of the SOUTH saying that it is typical in the south for whites to not give a chance to blacks, which I resent, and is typical of the thinking of some transplanted northerners to Texas/South USA. Re his statement:: "Let's put it this way -- if it were three middle-class white boys accused of bludgeoning three Black children on the same evidence, there's no way there would have been a conviction."

- Collapse -
No. read it.
May 15, 2006 8:04AM PDT

Clearly he was under the impression that the accused were black. What a contortion you've gone through to say otherwise.

And I am sorry, but your "wolfpack" theory is a completely bogus fantasy. Guess what, sometimes people confronted with the same evidence come to the same conclusions. Period. Saying there's a pack mentality here is insulting and ridiculous.

Sorry EdH, I also

took 101 reading comprehension in college and still can read and understand. He is making a attack on the SOUTH, he was NOT saying the people were black who attacked the white kids.
Course some Yankee's can't see that the SOUTH is being attacked.

Re: "And of course, innocent Blacks in the wrong place at the right time are never ever railroaded in America, right Mark? Just because they were convicted by a Southern jury doesn't mean they were guilty, since apparently there was very little real evidence against them."

And of course, innocent Blacks in the wrong place at the right time are never ever railroaded in America, right Mark? Just because they were convicted by a Southern jury doesn't mean they were guilty, since apparently there was very little real evidence against them. The problem, of course, is that the presumption of guilt turns around upon conviction, even if it was on flimsy evidence. Let's put it this way -- if it were three middle-class white boys accused of bludgeoning three Black children on the same evidence, there's no way there would have been a conviction. That doesn't speak to their real guilt or evidence -- I don't know, but then again, neither do you!

It is very clear what is meant and your spin is just that, spin. Yes, he is making an attack on the South but he IS also saying the accused are black. Otherwise the mention of race is completly out of left field.

Undeniable.

Spin? He said the accused are black?

Pls read my other posts, he was taking a "SHOT" at the SOUTH on trials. Can't believe he is not knowledgeable on the race of the convicted Memphis 3, sorry.

I can. He clearly is.

Dang, JR...you have a chip on your shoulder?...
May 15, 2006 2:35PM PDT

...seems like lately you just love to ''get into it'' with people on this forum. Seems like asking where you went to college is a pretty tame mundane, commonplace question. Why the attitude?

You know Dang well about your chip

that you are constant carrying with me, and quizing me... .what... about 3-4 times...in the past few years trying to find out where I live and get my telephone number. Tame mundame question?... ha..no thanks Jack. I did not reply to your last post to me which was deleted, and have no desire to communicate with you in any fashion. So, back off, & hit the road Jack.

...relate to what your saying. Everything about me is a public record and my life is an ''open book''. So I just cannot understand nor relate to someone that's so secretive, wanting to know everything about other people, but doesn't want other people to know anything about you. I, like you, like to know who I'm talking to on the forum. My apologies for trying to make friends with you.

Where have I ask to know about other people, pray tell?

I definately would not reveal anything about me to you, that's for sure

Trying to make friends, what a big laugh. If that was a sincere statement like you tried to snooker me before I would have received a CNet email, since that avenue has been open for almost 2 years. Sorry I don't fall for your tricks.

Night Jack

Sorry you think I'm talking for DK, but I understand what his post is about and it is against the Southern notion that blacks cannot get a fair trial in the south.
Who in the world thinks DK, who reads or hears the news apparently every day, frequently post concerning about the news, and didn't know that the Memphis convicted killers were white.
