CDs can't find the sound card

Feb 14, 2004 7:53PM PST

I recently had my computer upgraded and now some of my kid's game CDs can't find the sound card and therefore won't play. Most of them won't even load on the computer. It started happening when the modem was put in, so I think the modem may have changed some of the settings and the software now can't find the sound. Is there a way I can get the games to work without messing up use of the modem? Thanks in advance for your help. Djuana

Have you tried simply reinstalling the sound card drivers yet?

I don't know how to do that, and I'm desperately afraid of messing something up. Is it something you could tell me how to do pretty easily? Djuana

You got problems after installing the modem. So I would think that the connection has been broken. Try seeing if the sound card is plugged in the motherboard. It might have been set loose while installing the modem.
I hope it helps..

OOps sorry I forgot to mention. Opening the main system is not that difficult. You just need a screwdriver! and a manual that you might have when you purchased your system.

The sound card still works, its just that some of the games on the CDs can't find it. I think the modem changed some of the settings somehow, but I'm too computer illiterate to really know for sure. I definitely don't know how to fix it! :/ Djuana

I suggest you go back to the shop where either they did half a job, or justed messed it up. Until proven otherwise, it's their fault, and they should correct it without you paying anything. But they might not agree with that view.

Let them handle IRQ conflicts, config.sys, Device Manager, drivers, loose cables, Config Panel settings and what else can be wrong if you don't have sound. It's their work, and they are the experts (hopefully).

Kees,
That would work if I had it done in a shop, but my dad did it for me. Its kinda hard to get him back here, and we didn't realize there was a problem until after he was gone. Now I guess I'm kinda stuck. Djuana

I recently had my computer upgraded and now some of my kid's game CDs can't find the sound card and therefore won't play. Most of them won't even load on the computer.

1. Of course, we know that a CD is nothing but a chunk of plastic and has nothing to do with this but we do understand however these plastic disk usually have software on them which usually does things on a computer. Are you saying that these software games aren't giving any error messages whatsoever? If so, then give the game names and the full text shown on the monitor.

2. We also understand there are many type of modems and some of them are called Software modems since there is little hardware involved. What is the full manufacture information to include the model number of the modem installed?

3. We don't know since you didn't tell us whether there is a sound card in the system, what it is, or if the software is installed. If you access Multimedia in the control panel, what do you find there? Is there a Speaker icon in the System Tray?

4. If you access Device Manager, what if anything is showing as Unknown or any which renders errors? What is listed under the item "Sound, video and game controllers"?

5. Please note that just above the text editor (where you enter a question on the forum) is the following paragraph, and if certain information is not present in your question, our reply may not be of much help:

Tip: If you are asking for help to troubleshoot a computer-related problem, please be sure to include all the necessary information (ie: operating system, model number, hardware, software, etc) that will help others identify your problem for a speedy resolution.
