CDRW problems: udfreader

Jul 21, 2004 1:27PM PDT

I cannot view data (word documents) on a cd that was made using a hp cdrw "Sonic" program. (I am writing it on one pc and trying to read it on another pc.) I have always been able to do this until I bought this new hp. When opening the data cd in windows explorer, the cd claims to have udfreader file. Says I need to install it but nothing changes after it appears to be installed. What can I do to allow me to read and write on this cd on more that one pc?

1. Please note that just above the text editor (where you enter a question on the forum) is the following paragraph, and if certain information is not present in your question, our reply may not be very helpful:

Tip: If you are asking for help to troubleshoot a computer-related problem, please be sure to include all the necessary information (ie: operating system, model number, hardware, software, etc) that will help others identify your problem for a speedy resolution.

Here's my advice. Don't use UDF. Just erase the CD (quick-erase, not format) and use it as if it was CDR that was erasable. This gives you a CDRW that works in most machines plus you get the benefit of some 10,000 erase and record sessions.

If there is something you want to know about XP and CD recording, as well as all things CD recording the following two links have more than most will want to know.

We did a format recovery (we have Windows ME & our writer is MITSUMI CR-4804TE) and when we tried to open up files we had backed up on a CDRW, it stated that we needed to download UDFREADER. We did that. There is NOTHING showing up from my files... just an installer for this UDFREADER.

Is this some kind of upgrade scam? Does anyone how we can get our data back without having to use this program?

PLEASE HELP!!! AND THANKS IN ADVANCE IF ANYONE KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT THIS.

UDF is not good for "backup"

And take it as the lesson learned.

As to the UDFREADER, some programs such as Nero, Roxio, FileCD and such will drop the UDFREADER on the CDRW, but Windows ME being the loved OS it is may require you to install the UDF program from Roxio, Nero, FileCD, DLA or any number of others that I can't guess which you used, but will.... Need to install then update from their website.

Again, take time to learn how to live without UDF.

oside,

Even with correctly installed software, the UDF Reader message will frequently appear when the formatted CD-RW disk becomes corrupted and is therefore unreadable. This tends to happen when the CD-RW media has been copied to a large number of times or when the disk approaches it's capacity. As mentioned by others earlier in this thread, packet writing software such as Nero's "InCD" and Roxio's "DirectCD/Drag to Disk" are not reliable back up software. They have a genuine purpose for copying and transferring data, but don't depend on UDF/Packet writing software for long term storage. If you're going to use them, (I do), make sure to create back ups of your backups.

If the disk becomes corrupted in this manner, normally it can't be recovered without a fairly large effort from a CD recovery company.

Hope this helps.
