CDRW/DVD Combo Drive

Sep 25, 2004 6:41AM PDT

I collect a lot of graphics - jpegs, gifs, etc. and saved them to discs, along with digital photos. I recently went to search for certain photos and they are not showing up in the folders. The folders are there but they are empty. I do have alot of the jpegs and gifs though, but alot of them are not showing up as well.

Also, after inserting a cd, the only way I can open the drive now is by re-booting the computer and tapping on the button to open the drive upon re-boot. This only just started happening with the drive and only recently noticed that not all of my graphics are being displayed on the cd's when I used to access them with no problem.

Any adivice will be appreciated.

Thanks.

The drive open issue is well known.

'I can open the drive now is by re-booting the computer and tapping on the button to open the drive upon re-boot. "

Roxio updated its software because it would lock the door.

As to your other issue, try...

A. FIX XP PICTURE RESIZE Which is...

Start>Run and type REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL

B. FIX PREVIEW...?

Thank You So Much Bob!

Bob, thank you so much for your quick and sage response! I did as you said and ran REGSVR32 SHIMGVW.DLL and now everything works. The door even opened by pressing the button!

I'll check out the Roxio update though.

Thanks Bob, you're the best!

I'm unsure why the door issue is cured, but I thank you very much for that "nugget". Such feedback is invaluable since it leads to cures that I would not have suggested before.

Again, thank you very much for the report!

Well, on the rare occasion that I've had a problem I couldn't solve on my own, you are the one who's always come to my rescue!

Thanks!

Sorry, I had another cd in the drive, which displayed my pics properly. However, upon inserting another cd, I found that they were not. It's as if all the pics I organized into folders disappeared while the ones I did not put into folders remain.

And I'm not so sure about the other thing you asked me to try with the registry since I am not very experienced and skilled when dealing with the registry.

I did however, follow your suggestion and updated my Roxio software.

Here's an "issue".

Microsoft's EXPLORER is a poor choice to view CD's with photos. Here's why. EXPLORER wants to create and use a cache file called THUMBS.DB If such is on the CD and is not current, some files may never show.

Try http://www.tweakxp.com/tweak255.aspx and remember how to turn it back on if you wish.

Also, try http://www.irfanview.com to view that CD content.

Perhaps I should have told you I'm using Windows ME.

I tried infranview and nothing showed up. I had forgotten about that program. I don't see how files that were once on the cd are no longer there. As I said, all others that were not organized into folders show up. Most are jpegs and gifs.

Oh, and I'm having that problem with the door again. Seems to work on some cd's and on others, the door works. My computer seems to be developing a mind of it's own and rebelling against me or something!

Copy those files to the hard disk, ....
Sep 25, 2004 12:05PM PDT

And uncheck the read-only flag. The thumbs.db issue extends to Windows ME as well.

If you have CDs that are not in great shape, Windows will seem to be very balky...

I can't see any files at all. It's as if they've all been deleted. And I know they were there because I recently looked through them.

My door seems to be working again! Go figure!

I appreciate you taking the time to help me through this very annoying and puzzling dilemma.

BTW, my cd's are in great shape - always kept in their cases. I've gone through several cd's already and all of my photos are gone!

Did you happen to use CDR disks?
Sep 25, 2004 1:23PM PDT

Some use CDRs and the MULTISESSION recording method. I'd love to comment more, but your post didn't tell.

Yes, I used CDR discs and CDRW discs as well.

Too vague.
Sep 25, 2004 1:55PM PDT

While I read that use of both CDR and CDRW is done, you didn't confirm the use of MULTISESSION. That is....

DID YOU ADD FILES TO A CDR MORE THAN ONCE?

Read http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&threadm=gPTS6.88%24Mf6.1915%40dfw-service2.ext.raytheon.com&rnum=5&prev=/groups%3Fq%3Dcdr%2Bfaq%2Bmultisession%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26selm%3DgPTS6.88%2524Mf6.1915%2540dfw-service2.ext.raytheon.com%26rnum%3D5

And it will fail for far too many reasons so I never use that method. To fix it, I have to know that we are trying to get multisession working again.

Sorry Bob. Sometimes I use multisession and sometimes I don't. Usually, I keep the session open so that I can add data at a later date. However, with regard to my photos, I don't believe I added anything more than once. I was cleaning up my hard drive and just transferred everything in one swell swoop!

I hope this helps you - a little!

I don't discount Bob's experience . He certainly knows what he is talking about. But I have been using multi-session in both Windows and Linux with no problems
for several years. Both CDRW and(mostly now) CDRs. I did
have a problem similar to yours when I used InCD to record some things. Could not access the files(header showed up) even using same computer and program. Haven't used anything like InCD or DirectCD since. Good luck.

For chuck...

People only bring me the worst of what happens so my view of multisession is less than blissful and as to InCD/DirectCD it's just a horror show.

Hope this explains why I don't endorse it.
