CDRW disk becomes unuseable after adding files

Apr 25, 2005 1:11AM PDT

My system is a Pentium III running Win98SE.
CDRW drive is Creative RW8432E.
Burning software is Roxio Easy CD Creator v5.3.5 and I am using the UDF format to transfer files.

I've been burned by this three times now, here's what happens. After having added files to the CD multiple times, and checking after each add session to make sure files are ok, at some point after adding more files the CD becomes unreadable except for a folder that is named UDFREADER containing three files. The data is still there because the Scandisk utility that Roxio provides can find the files and save them to my hard drive. Has this happened to anyone else and is there a fix?

Yup.

But that version is so old I doubt you can find the updates.

Try this -> Don't add files. Just quick erase and make a new closed session.

CD becomes unreadable after adding files

Well Bob, that doesn't help much. I am using the CD to save jpg pictures, and I want to be able to add new ones as they become available. I offload the jpg's from my hard drive to save disk space. It works fine for a while and then suddenly the cd becomes unreadable.

The Creative drive has the latest available firmware update, and the Roxio software has been upgraded to the latest version which is 5.3.5.

I guess I'll just have to forget archiving to cd and keep all the pix on the hard drive. Thanks for answering.

I missed that 5. (five dot) part.

Sorry about that.

But the issue is quite pervasive. To the point that when someone reports the issue the only fix is to stop using DirectCD or Drag to CD.

-> Another fine mess is that you can't trust UDF disks once you put them into another machine. This area is full of compatibility issues.
