CD Writer Not writing at its original speed!!

Sep 24, 2004 12:55AM PDT

I had a 48X speed CD writer, but when I try to burn things into a CD, the program i use showing that my max writing speed is just 18X(I choose to write in max 48X speed). I am using Windows XP Pro. What can I do to have my CD writer writing at its max 48X speed?

I find that NERO reads the speed of the MEDIA and that will limit the maximum speed.

What media are you using?

Just used a Memorex. Small world.

That batch was 16X speed and my 52X recorder recorded at... 16X

So far I don't see an issue.

Where is the input to the drivecoming from?

Is it possible that your burn proof feature is slowing things down to prevent the buffer from getting empty????

The speed rating of the drive is the drive's maximum data transfer rate, which is not necessarily the speed at which the drive can reliably write to every part of a disk. The numbers you give actually sound pretty normal, but if you want the best performance out of XP, stop all unnecessary processes from running while you are writing CDs.

THis is in conjunction with Bob's response.
Nero Burning ROm has a program called CD Drive Speed. Try to have that software, actually it is packaged with Nero's burning rom (later issues), and can be downloaded thru their website (trial version).
In running Nero Burning ROM, the software automatically sets the optimum writing speed so you will not have any recording errors or "slides" in recording. You can change the speed setting though but you have to consider the maximum writing speed of your CDRW.
By the way what is the 48x you are referring to, is it the reading, re-writing or writing speed?
The buffer underrun protection as an added feature for some CDRWs but has no effect in the writing speed. The media you use also limits recording speed, try using multi speed CDR's. In any manner, the CD Drive speed will provide you information as to the speed limitation of your hardware. I had tried using ROxio, Alcohol 120%, Cd Image and Blind Write, but they all provided the same data as Nero's.
