CD writer not working. Is Windows XP SP2 a culprit?

I recently installed thee Special Pack2 and from that time onwards I am getting an error message whenever I try to write on a CD-R or CD-RW. I have tried writing it using Windows XP's own internal mechanism, ROXIO and also NERO 6. If anybody needs to look at a log file genearted by Nero I am ready to post it as well. I want to know if anybody else has encountered the same problem? If so then how were you able to overcome it?

It's possible, but given how many dead CDRW drives "tech" replaces each week, my outlook is "unlikely". When I need to test a CDRW, I use a simple for me tool. I boot up a KNOPPIX (look up on google.com) and use K3b to test the drive.

Sometimes I skip that and just toss a new drive in.

First of all, for anyone reading this, I would not reccomend installing MS XP service pack 2 until more is known about it. You should read all the articles you can before installing it. Microsoft admits that it has no idea what way, and kind of software this SP2 will affect. They even go as far to say that it may give you errors on programs you have always used, and deemed to be safe. This is considered to be more of an upgrade than a SP. This SP2 is focused mainly on security and is willing to risk other problems in turn for better security; which is not a bad thing. If you need to, uninstall the SP until you are familiar with how it is going to affect your system and programs.

Very wise advise jmac0225!
Naturally we all would like to have our WinXp up-to-date, but in the long run (my opinion) it's better to let SP2 have a little testing ground before installing this considerable update.
Who knows, Microsoft might even include an update "for the Update".

I have done exactly the same thing and have experienced the same problem. My Sony CD-RW drive worked fine before the "sp2 Upgrade" now it will not write at all. I took the drive out of that machine and put it in my other machine (which has not been "Upgraded" with sp2) and without doing anything it worked. That was conclusive to me. I now know that the drive is ok but I still have not fixed the problem. My last resort is to reload XP with SP1 the SP2 then load my software.

I bought a computer when XP first came out and right before SP1 was released. I downloaded and installed SP1 and had all kinds of problems with the software that was already installed. In fact, my computer ran so slow, it almost stopped. I restored the computer to the original state, installed a firewall, downloaded/installed SP1 then installed all of my software and everything worked just fine. Software that had problems or conflicts when SP1 was installed later did fine when it was installed first. I am willing to bet the same thing can and will happen with SP2.
