CD's keep becoming unreadable

by rebamom / May 25, 2008 10:42 PM PDT

I have been backing up my photos onto CD's. However within a few months the CD's become unreadable. The CD drive doesn't even recognize the CD - it just keeps spinning. This has happened with several different batches of CD's. CD's written by other PC's are fine - this just happens with those created by this PC. Could this be a virus or do we just need to buy a new CD / DVD drive?

While a new drive is a good idea, how old is the old drive?

Also you didn't tell how the disks were made. I find DRAG AND DROP CD creation to be unreliable.

I use SINGLE CLOSED SESSIONS for this reason.

Unreadable PC's
by rebamom / May 26, 2008 1:06 AM PDT

PC is about 3 years old. All the CD's ever made on the PC have become unreadable...all CD's made on other PC's are fine!

I HAVE been using the drag and drop method.
What is the SINGLE CLOSED SESSIONS method that you mentioned?

Thanks

The FREE program called CDBURNERXP offers such. You could test it with your drive and media. When you run this one, you add the files to be recorded and when you click the burn button there is an item to close the session after recording. That's what I use for the most compatible CD I can create.

Drag and drop means "packet writing" and has a long history of issues. Since I have yet to see a cure I don't use that.
