CD-RW Recognition

Mar 9, 2004 11:13PM PST

Recently replaced my Sony CD-RW with a Norcent 521. (The Sony failed)

Having a problem with my system not recognizing this unit as an "RW."

I have a custom made 450 MHz P3 (dual cpu) with 768mb memory, running Windows 98SE.

Have attempted uninstall/ reinstall several times, and it always comes up the same. Works just fine as a CD Rom, plays music & loads programs. When I try to copy data to a CD-RW I get the grey/ red notice "F: is not accesible"/ "Device not ready."

Downloaded Norcent's 52X.ZIP patch and ran it; no help.

Device Manager says I have an ATAPI CD-RW 52X24 (Device type = CD-ROM). Driver is Microsoft, dated 4-23-1999.

Where am I going wrong? Really need the help. Need to back up all sorts of data.

Thanks in advance.

1. The version of DirectCD/InCD/DLA or such needs to be installed or if you don't use those, then the BUNDLED Nero or such needs to be installed. The old version is unlikely to work with the new drive.

2. Windows 98 doesn't do CDRW natively.

Thanks Bob,

Reloaded ALL the bundled Nero ware. Works very nicely now.
