Question

CD-RW not working ?driver maybe?

Jul 25, 2011 2:00AM PDT

I had to reinstall Windows due to corrupt files. My CD drive was working then. I have done all the upgrades for IE8, .NET, etc. and somewhere along the way, Windows does not recognize my CD-ROM drive. It shows up in the Device Manager, but it has an "i" in a yellow circle next to it. I have tried uninstalling and letting Windows reinstall the info for it, but no luck. I tried the Microsoft "Fix-It" download, but that also didn't help.

What other suggestions would you suggest?

Almost always the upper and lower filter removal issue.

You tried the fixit, did you try the manual method and most of all -> Did you reboot after?

Remember that old CD recording software and registry cleaners are top causes. It would be nice to know which caused it.

Lower Filter was the culprit
Jul 26, 2011 5:18AM PDT

I read thru all the advice concerning the Upper and Lower Filters, and bit the bullet. I am nervous about modifying my registry when I don't know for sure what will happen, but in this case it was all that was needed.

I wish I knew what added that Lower Filter entry to my registry. I use C-cleaner and Glary Utilities faithfully (must have been one of them). I do more maintenance on my PC than I do on my car (my PC is older than my car). I need to keep both working for a good long time.

Thanks to everyone that helped - or even thought about helping. Watch out for the lower filter setting. It might just bite you like it did me.

In regards to CCLeaner.

In it's stock settings, even if I use CCleaner's registry cleaner I've yet to cause a CODE 39 issue.

Most of the time it's caused by me uninstalling iTunes, Roxio, Nero InCD or some Microsoft WMP update.

I can't speak of Glary as that's been a source of too many posts here (pleas for help.) That is, I have no reason the try that app.
