CD Rom troubles

Aug 27, 2010 8:03AM PDT

Hi,

I need some help in getting my cd-roms back up and running. Recently they have stopped showing up in my computer page and when I click on the yellow exclamation point in hardware manager I get a message referencing a microsoft error. (18 or 19) if I recall.
When I follow the instructions to solve this error the system message tells me there's a problem with the registry. I'm on windows xp pro SP3 and havent encountered this before. How do I get the ROM drives to fire up and read/burn discs?? I have no skill in editing the registry so I hope there is another solution. Thanks in advance.

help in getting my cd-roms back

One possible solution, go to the manufacturers website to see if there are drivers/ firmware for whatever model # of those particular CD-ROMS.

If no updates, etc. are available; then maybe think about replacing them with a new CD/ DVD-ROM,they're pretty inexpensive these days.

Use device manager......remove the cd(s).

Reboot.

With a little luck windows will get it sorted.

Here's MS take on the topic:

While it refers to reloading the device drivers, in the XP, the OS provides the native driver for CD drives. I suggest you either do an OS repair using the install disc, or if actually uses a different driver, look-up your model#(CD drive) and locate one. Under XP, you can use the "restore" feature and pick a date when the problem didn't exist. Hopefully, it will return before any registry repair, reload drivers, etc., if not then that's the course to take.
