...have you tried replacing the drive.. The symptoms sound like a failing drive.
Most Vista machines don't come with CD drives.. They come with DVD drives.

Windows Vista Basic. Any PC games not already installed cannot be run. Two games are already installed and working, but only after clicking on their icons in the Start Menu; instead of the autorun running when the CD is inserted, it says the "D: drive is invalid". But obviously it is valid, because I can run the game from the Start Menu, right?
So all other CDs I insert into the computer dispay no autorun and no messages. Searching for the CD in computer files results in ejection of the CD, and an on-screen prompt to "Insert a CD", although it was already in. As suggested in a few of the game manuals when Autorun doesn't start up, I went to "Run", then typed in "D:\Autorun" or "D:\autorun.exe", as per the instructions; The ensuing search met with no end and had to be stopped by way of entering and exiting Task Manager. What's going on with my computer?
