cd rom kaput

Oct 25, 2004 11:25AM PDT

CD drive on compaq presario stopped working. Never have replaced one, but have opened box and added RAM several times and removed and installed power supply, so I'm pretty handy. Can I buy a new one at a big box store and be sure of getting the right one? Is the connector the same on all of them so I can just plug it in? Not sure where to begin.

Hi if you can do a power supply you can do a cd-rom. One thing to look for when doing this is the way the cd-rom is configured. On the back of said unit there will be pins most will come as master. You will have to look at the old one and configure it the same on the new one.Once this is done it is a matter of unplugging three different pluggings. One for power supply, the next for sound and the last for mother boad interface. Take your time and make sure to ground your self before reaching in to the puter.Happy

I see no major hassle here. If you like remove your old CD drive and take it with you. If this is aplain CD-R(read only) you can replace with similar or any other IDE type(interface) like CD-R or CD/RW(read-write) or even a DVD type. The choice is yours and what your wallet can handle. I wouldn't thought there maybe a sale at some big store center.
