CD-ROM is not working

Nov 3, 2006 2:26PM PST

I was trying to use my CD/DVD combo drive but all of a sudden the drive was not recognized by the computer. I went to My Computer and the drive was not listed where it used to. I have tried to load CDs but they don't seem to be recognized by the computer. When I insert the disk the CD-ROM light is orange but then thats all it does. I need help and don't know what to do.

Given no OS mentioned the options are..

1. Replace the drive.
2. Reload the OS.

The OS I have is Windows XP. It's a Compaq Presario V5201US Notebook PC with Super Multi 8X DVD+-R/RW drive with Double Layer support. Like I said in the previous post, I was trying to use it but when I insert a cd-rom or a regular cd, nothing happens on the computer. I can hear the little noise when the disk is turning and the light is orange, but then it stops and the computer does not show that I have a cd drive at all. I really need help. Thank you.

CD Suddenly Not Recognized

I had the same problem. To elminate a lot of messing around, just delete the upper & lower filters in your registry. Be sure to back up the registry first. For step-by-step instructions on how to do this, go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060 Read it carefully to make sure the instructions fit your situation. Shut down & restart your machine. Good luck.
