Do the obivous and clean the CD media and drives themselves. Then, check under the device mgr. for any red/yellow flags, they need attention. The media player won't work if the CD drives aren't accessible.
De-install any CD "drivers", reboot and see if the CD drives are noted. if they are, install any drivers and/or s/w that came with them. Reload the mtrbd. buss or bridge drivers, don't take anything for granted, just do it.
Have you tried any malware scanners? Run them to check results, and proceed accordingly. Do you use different s/w for the CD and DVD drives. Try removing one(disconnect) and then use the remaining one. If that don't work, de-install entirely whatever CD drive(s) s/w installed, any kind. Shutdown, disconnect, then reboot, allow to finish. Check the device mgr. for any CD drives(should be none). Exit, and reboot into "safe mode", then check the device mgr. for CD listing,(should be none), OK, then exit out and reboot, allow to finish, once done, shutdown. Now add, one CD drive(ONE!) make it master or CS connect, power-UP and check results. Install any s/w required, does it work afterwards. If not, you have a bad drive, mtrbd. buss, or severe OS glitch. I suggest then to save any data possible, then reload the whole system from scratch, wipe out(refornmat, etc) and load the OS, all drivers, updates, etc. sorry....
