CD R/W Problem

Jun 11, 2004 12:49AM PDT

We purchased a very good (CNET 87%+ reviewed) CD R/W a month ago for use in our WinXP system. It's been used to load software and burn a number of custom-tunes CD's for the children, in addition to backing up files.

We are using the MS standard software package to do the burns.

In the last few days, the CD will occasionally refuse to open and close with the panel button, and I've had to open it with the straight paperclip in the emergency 'hole.' Once it's open, if you gently shove the tray, it will close and the green control lights will light up.

But now and then, the lights will NOT light up, and a popup will appear asking for 'media;' the CD does not regognize when media is present.

Any thoughts? Is this a 'settings' flaw on our part?

Thanks, in advance, for your assistance.

Not flaw, but an enhancement.

'owdy,

Even with the Easy CD Creator software I use, if DirectCD.exe by Roxio is not resident (starts when the system starts), I cannot use either the drive's front CD/RW button or use the right-click Eject option found when at the drive in Explorer/My Computer, until it is started either as just mentioned or starting the software where I must step through several items and find Eject CD. After accomplishing the second mentioned and any time after, I can use either of the aforementioned to eject my CD disc.

I ran Search on my box and found no "DirectCD" program. Are you suggesting that I should go find that s/w and download it?

What I'm saying only is that unless there is an option somewhere within the software used which allows unlocking then . . .
