CD-R/RW won't spin

my CD-R/RW won't spin. I insert a CD and it starts to spin the abruptly stops. I have disconnected it from the ribbon connector and tried it...same thing. My CD-rom inserted in the same computer works fine. Since CD drives are relatively inexpensive should I just install a new one. My computer is kind of old but works well otherwise...
