CD plays GREAT in iTunes, but will NOT play on iPhone

I have an iPhone, 16GB 3GS with plenty of free space. When I first experience the problem I describe below, I made sure to get the latest updates to both my iPhone and my iTunes.
I have a CD that I imported into iTunes and it plays perfectly in iTunes. It's an audio book and I own the CD, nothing pirated.
PROBLEM: When I sync the audio file (the imported CD) to my iPhone, there is no volume when the file plays. The play indicator moves and if you listen very, very carefully, you can barely hear it playing, but you can't really make out the words. I have dumped the whole thing and installed it again and again and I have tried different formats, wav, mp3, Apple Lossless, I tried copying the CD first and importing it. ALL options work in iTunes, but not on the iPhone (for that particular CD). I have other CD's that I have copied and they work fine on the iPhone and in iTunes. I even have other CD's from the same author (audio books) and they are on the iPhone now and and work. AND I have copied other CD's to the phone since that one. ONLY THAT ONE IS STUBBORN AND WON'T WORK. I have called all the Apple Geeks I know and they ask me all the standard questions, but have no clues as to why this one CD won't play correctly.
Any one have any ideas??????
