A very simple one chip affair for many many years. MP3 required a small computer chip and now is down to one or two chips again. Until a few years ago, such chips didn't exist and even now still cost more than a simpler CDAudio chip.

I have a question I hope someone can help me out with. I have two discman/walkman. Both are KOSS brand, nice low price and not big deal if they get damaged, easily replaced. Anyways, one of them is a regular cd discman while the other plays cd's and MP3 discs. Does anyone know what makes them different? What makes one play MP3's and the other not. Is it the laser that reads the cd or is it a processor that makes the difference? Odd question I know. Any advice is great appreciated. Thanks in advance.
