CD Icon doesn't appear anywhere when any disk is inserted

Dec 25, 2006 11:01AM PST

Okay, so I'm on a eMac, with an earlier version of OSX, and any disk that I try inserting into the drive won't appear anywhere on my computer, desktop, finder, disk utility, none of them. I've tried various things mentioned in other forums and troubleshoot pages but nothing has seemed to have worked.

I've tried "flashing the PRAM" as mentioned in the thread by oblio211, who had a problem similar to my own.

I've tried restarting the computer, as well as shutting it down, leaving it for a bit restarting again, both did nothing.

I've tried using both burned and commercially made disks, and nothing seems to work.

I'm hoping that someone has an idea as to how I might fix this problem, but if needs be I'll just take the damn thing in Silly

I put in the CD that you install the OS from and boot from that. If that boot fails (I don't reinstall the OS!) then I try another CD drive.

Thank you for your response, I tried just now using the original CD, but didn't seem to do much, and right now I'm trying using an upgrade CD, I'm not sure how that's going to work out just yet. I'm happy though that my computer recognized at least a blank CD, so I'm trying burning something to see if maybe by some strange chance that it might clear up my problem.

Sometimes the CD lens cleaner helps.

But if the drive is old and read no disks I just look at the head and move straight to the swap. Old in my book is 2 and up years.

Have you tried using any external Firewire/USB drives to see if the system can recognize those?
