cd/dvd repopulation

May 17, 2005 6:39AM PDT

I am running a dvd and a dvd rewriter on xp pro. Each time I try to use them I have to go into hardware properties and repopulate each machine. How can I avoid this?

cd/dvd populate

To clarify my previous query. Every time I try to use my cd drives I have to go into properties of the cd drives and "populate" each drive. Each drive will not run unless I do this.

That was supposed to explain what

you mean by "repopulate". I still have no idea but I know that I am dumb.

He's talking about under the volumes tab under the properties of a given optical device. I have no idea why he'd have to polulate them before using them though. Never seen that before.

Thanx, Platinum. I've

never noticed that screen before. Still don't see the word populate, and just how would one go about populating it manually??

The only reason that I posted was that the post sat there so long with no reply. usually that type of post gets answered by Robert Proffitt and a bunch of others. I thought that I might discover why the guy got ignored for so long.

Why I didn't post.

I've been programming up a storm here and the member neglected the words in red that you see with every post.

The issue is typical of an incomplete OS install or tinkering with the auto insert notifications. AUTOFIX might fix it, but given so littel to work with, we'll just see if they will post a complete story and inventory.

Not so much for me.

I can wait. It's usually the person with the ailing machine that gets antsy.

AUTOFIX link with explanation.

See -> http://www.jsifaq.com/SUBN/tip6900/rh6952.htm

While it may seen at first to not be the issue, tinkering with Windows to kill off autoplay can damage the system and cause such an issue.

But such a story has not been told, so it's conjecture and experience that I write from.

Why Mr. Proffitt, isn't that just a nifty little tool. Thanks. James.

Why yes, it is. Here's a few more in my bag.

Look up these if you get broken OSes to play with...

1. KNOPPIX. Great to boot from when the machine can't be booted to see if the files can be saved.

2. IEFIX. Automates the most common OS repairs.

3. WINSOCKFIX (many versions out) Spyware damages the winsock. This fixes it.

Hit the "Populate" button on the bottom of that volumes window.

Repopulate!
May 24, 2005 5:43AM PDT

Problem solved.

I had the misfortune to install easy cd creator 5 platinum and this screwed up my cd/dvd drives I had to delete this poxy programme, start Registry editor and delete the upper/lower filters. this worked a treat.

Note; To populate a cd drive look in the cd properties/volumes properties and populate
