no conflicts & device working properly when, in fact, the DVD was DEAD!
Replaced with similar and worked perfectly as soon as booted!
My cd/DVD drive has been problematic for as long as I've had it (2+years). Occaisonally DVDs that I would try and view would not be detected. The drive would spin like 6 times, but then stop. No media would be detected in Windows Explorer or any other multimedia program.
What would normally work to fix this would be to put blow compressed air into the CD tray, and/or playing an audio CD first (which would be detected no problem), and then play the DVD.
But now, no matter what I put in the drive, it spins only 2x, and then there's nothing.
If I look at the Device Manager, there are no hardware conflicts, it says everything is working properly. I've got the latest firmware updates, and I tried uninstalling the device and reinstalling several times. If I run Nero InfoTool, it also tells me that there is no media in the drive, no matter what I put in there (audio cd, data cd, DVD). The only thing I haven't tried is a bootable cd (don't have one handy).
I have an HP Pavilion ZX5200 laptop, running Windows XP Pro, with 1.28GB of RAM. The drive causing the problem is a Toshiba ODD - DVD SD R6252.
I'm going to try buying a lens cleaner tomorrow, in case the laser/sensor is really dirty.
Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? Software conflicts? Can Symantec anti-virus block the CD player from working? My university has installed Symantec, and I can't change any of it's settings (except by modifying the registry, which I did a few weeks ago to stop the Startup scan). Could this be causing the problem? I don't think so, but I thought I'd mention it....
Help!!! I'm starting to think that it's finally a hardware issue... I hate HP. Nothing but problems with their laptops (have already gone through 2 laptops that were lemons and had to be replaced under warranty, and then 2 hard drives (in one laptop) in the past 4 years)
So I'm not under warranty anymore, so is it a pain/expensive to install a new CD player in a laptop?
