CD/DVD Drive Issues (Red Apple Icon?)

Sep 8, 2008 1:40PM PDT

I got my new Sony Vaio FZ4000 for college with Vista. With CDs that are supposed to auto-play the installation file, auto-play DOES pop up but the installation file will not work. Also, to add to my confusion, when I go to MY COMPUTER and look at my DVD drive, it recognizes that there is a CD in there, but instead of saying DVD-ROM, there is a red apple icon. I'm thinking it's a compatibility issue but I'm not sure how to resolve it. The disc doesn't mention Vista on it but it does mention XP. Any ideas on how to remedy this?

Try it with UAC disabled.

Some older software will fail to launch from CD with UAC turned on. Not a bug according to mother.

UAC?

What exactly is UAC? I'm not entirely up to date with all this newer stuff. And thanks for the quick reply!

Uninstall ITUNES and try again.

Sorry, it's not a widespread issue or at least I haven't had one given to me yet. If that's an "apple" I would for the test uninstall iTunes.

Interesting

Was the disc burned on a MAC? I know Starry Night uses QuickTime, that shouldn't be an issue, I'm running it on VISTA.

Have you found the solution to the Red apple icon issue? I have this problem now and I can't fix it.

I am also having the same exact issue with windows XP. I have searched everywhere I possibly could with no answer. I do not have Itunes installed or any other apple product.

Still no dice

I was the original poster and i STILL haven't found a solution. I contacted Microsoft directly and PAID for technical support. Unfortunately, they offered no fix (so i got my money back!). I worked for THREE HOURS with someone who barely spoke English and nothing worked. I DID find a way around it though. If you boot in safe mode and then try to install things then it works fine. This leads me to believe it is some program which is affecting us so negatively.

New news.

The only new items I've run into that caused similar issues are software that was installed after the owner got the machine. Let's keep it short.

1. CD/DVD emulators.
2. Some Autorun pests.
3. Nero, Roxio software.

If it never worked when new, then why isn't this a warranty issue?

I had the same problem. Finally I removed something called XPLAY3, it seems to be related to ipods.

File check.

Yo, jtdickey - I am having and have had the same problem. It has something to do with apple (as in the company) files that are on the cd. I know on Xp there is a way of viewing the windows files on there as i have been able to do it before. I do not know where, but there should be a 'switch to windows files' button somewhere. I do beleive it has something to do with 'Bootcamp' although' it is possible that updated versions of windows could be able to detect apple files as i coulkd get this to work on my XP yet could get it to work on vista. Plus it has nothing to do with UAC.
