Question

Cd / DVD Cleaners

Aug 15, 2013 12:05PM PDT

Is it necessary to clean the DVD/CD with a cleaner? I've never used one, but I have the cleaner; just wondering.

I don't as a habit. But there is a reason for having one.

I have one in my computer house call kit. When folk have trouble with CD/DVD drives (note: BD drives have different flying heights from media to head) you have to give the cleaner a shot.

I'd say it works in 1% of the calls. It's so low it's not funny but if you didn't do it and the client found out the drive came back after use, you would be at risk of losing your street cred.

In most cases it isn't used that much. It does a very basic wiping or sweeping of dust from the "lens or laser LED". A good blast of canned air will do the same, but it's always nice to have one. If you use one that requires some cleaning liquid, do follow instructions. At the same time, if you found dust present when you eject the cleaning disc, woooo that certainly needs attention and a physical sighting of possible cause of fault.

I hope you're not talking about actual "disc cleaners" that wipe down the discs themselves and not the player. Generally, I don't trust those where a wiping with soft sloth will do fine.
