"How can i find out the make of my cd-rw to update the drivers without taking it out of the machine?"

For most OS, there are no "DRIVERS" that need updating specific to the CDRW. The CD function is natively supported in OSes such as Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP and a few others. DOS and Windows 3.x needed a DOS real mode driver, but there are definitely no updates there.

Maybe you meant something else?

Hi Des
I think what you mean to say is that how to find out the exact model number of your CD-RW so that you can update it's drivers from the manufacturer's website without openning the computer case.If this is the case then download "Nero Ping" from www.nero.com and this will do the trick.Let me know what happens.Good Luck.

Sometimes if you look in device manger, you'll get the exact make/model # of the drive. An alternive program is Belarc (google it)- it'll give you a nice snapshot of everything on your system. Also, you can often get the make model from your bios, or on bootup. Good luck.

Hi Des:
All CD drives seem to use the same driver software, at least that been my experience. They are Windows System 32 driver files, which are located in your windows folder.
I don't believe you will find any updated drivers on any of the manufacturers web sites.
If youre having a problem with your drive, just post here in the PC Hardware Forum.
I'm sure someone can answer your questions.
