CD Drive(s) Detected but not reading media

Feb 18, 2006 9:41AM PST

I have a Dell Optiplex260 with a regular cd-drive and a cd-rw drive. Last week they both stopped detecting any kind of cd media. For testing, I put in my XP install disk and forced a cd boot (F12) but it was not detected in both drives. The strange thing is "My Computer" shows both drives and respond to the "eject" command. For further testing, I tried a new IDE cable and verified the jumpers on the drives (both on cable select) I also took a known good cd-drive from a friends pc and installed it (tried BOTH IDE contollers on mb) but got the same results: Windows detects the cd-drive but no cd's. And trust me, I tried about 20 different CD's all of which works on my friends pc.
Please, somebody help me!!

You didn't tell what type of IDE cable you used or what happens if you tried just ONE drive.

When I tested my friend's cd-rom drive I used a brand new IDE cable and only hooked up the single drive. Tried CS and Master. Same results.

1. Dead drive, dead IDE port.

2. IDE port 2 is disabled in the BIOS.

There are 2 types of standard IDE cables. You didn't tell which type you used.
