CD Drive Opens On Its Own

It doesn't matter most of the time whether or not there is a CD in there and it is aggrevating. I have lost track of how many replacement drives I've had and hate to get another. Could the problem be in Windows XP?

What make and model laptop are you using? Which version of XP are you using(Home, Media Center or Pro)? These are a couple of things that may help as there are likely lots of possible issues here.

CD Drive Opens On Its Own

I use a laptop, Gateway Solo 1450 with Windows XP Home Edition. However, tonight I noticed that the oval button that normally opens the door is really pushed in. Someone suggested WD 40 to get it back out.

"Another stupid Internet Explorer trick... This webpage actually opens your CD-ROM drive without prompting"

This goes to show you that IE is not to be trusted. Use anything else.

-> Scan with EWIDO, HOUSECALL and eject all that is found. Hopefully this is not dead hardware but a pest.

CD Drive Opens On Its Own

I don't know what EWIDO and HOUSECALL are. Anyway tonight I noticed that the oval button on the door is really pushed in. Should I use something like WD 40 to get it out, as someone I know suggested?

Doubtful.

That's not material I'd use on a laptop.

As to the items I noted, have you heard of http://www.google.com ? Please type those names there.

Thanks. Straightening out this computer is so time consuming that I am tempted to buy another one. In addition to these programs I have to also download an run TreeSize, as suggested by another moderator for another system problem. As for the two you suggested, should I uninstall them after running them or leave them on my system?

I leave it installed. Especially if...

You use Internet Explorer. EWIDO should help dispense with the usuals.

EWIDO and HOUSECALL

I just ran the above. No issues were found. Since I have a 30GB drive divided into three partitions I am considering going back to a one partition drive.

That's a good clue. I'd try this next...

Move the drive letter of the CDROM out to R: (for cdRom?) and retest.

I hope my system allows that. It came as a D.

Windows let you change it...

Here's how for XP

1. Click the start button

2. Go into Administrative tools (either in the start button or in "All Programs"

3. From Administrative Tools, go into "Computer Management"

4. In "Computer Management", click on "Disk Management" under "Storage" from the left menu

5. You should see a window from the lower right hand corner open (it shows all the hard disk drives and cd-rom drives)

6. To change...

...hard drive, click on the hard disk with a blue horizonal bar, the box should be shaded; next right click that box that you desire to change the letter then click on "Change Letter Drive and Path"

...cd-rom drive, click on the box that you desire the drive letter; next right click that box that you desire to change the letter then click on "Change Letter Drive and Path"

7. click the "change..." button

8. from the "assign the following drive letter", select the letter you want to assign to the hard drive or the cd-rom drive

9. click ok

10. click ok

11. (optional) redo the whole step to reassign other hard drives or cd-rom drives

Thanks; however, I am thinking of eliminating my partitions and declaring my hard drive as one partition. Then I will delete programs that generate many image files on the primary partition. Since runing TreeSize, EDWIDO, and HOUSECALL my computer runs sluggishly and just shut down by itself. Besides the door problem I do not have much free space on my C drive.

Thanks for your input. This is the same as the topic "CD Drive Flies Open"; so, you know of my solution.

Louis

P.S. Mr. Wilkinson deserves thanks too.
