cd drive not working...help!

Jan 3, 2008 7:27AM PST

i recently had a Vundo Trojan and had to clean it and system restore back to factory...

after doing so i'm trying to load up my anti virus again and the cd won't boot, in fact no cd will boot up...i tried updating drivers but they dont need to be...when i put a cd in the light flashes a couple of times but the rom just doesnt auto read and when i click on the icon in Computer it just says "insert a disk" and pops the drive...

now before i did the system restore my cd drive was workin just fine

any ideas??

Yes, I noted that.

Maybe not here but the upperfilters, etc works to fix Vista too. I'd try that.

Then we move to SAFE MODE.
Jan 3, 2008 10:35PM PST

In SAFE MODE head to the Device Manager and remove the DVD drive(s). Exit and on reboot they will be redetected. If they fail then it's likely a failed drive. Swap it out and retest.

If you installed ANY CD/DVD emulators I can't know that and won't ask. I work with what you supply and no longer ask too many questions except you try to at least supply what the words in red ask for.

Good luck,

Bob

Here's the words in red.
Jan 5, 2008 9:57PM PST

"Note: If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem."

This is all volunteer so when I stop to help you change your flat tire you get to help find the parts, do the hard work and deeply engaged in the process. There is no tude here. I expect you to heed the words in red so I don't have to ask for them.

-> How did the safe mode procedure work out?

this is just vexing because it was working properly before i did my system restore then BAM...not reading discs

Then an acid test.
Jan 6, 2008 1:49AM PST

Try to boot any bootable CD. If that fails it explains many things.

You need to tell MORE about the SAFE MODE exercise. Did the drive come back after the reboot? If not this tells us one thing, if it does then it tells me another. Small details help here.

ok
Jan 6, 2008 2:01AM PST

ok bootable CDs just do not read

when i unistalled the drive and rebooted...the drives where auto installed upon restart and the drive appears in Computer but does not read/recognize any disks still

"ok bootable CDs just do not read"
Jan 6, 2008 3:15AM PST

Then the drive is dead. Try another. For a laptop with Vista it will be under warranty so no big deal.

Recap.
Jan 6, 2008 3:17AM PST

We've done all the usual registry filters items, safe mode device removal and "Try to boot any bootable CD. If that fails.." the bootable discs do not boot.

The only issue left is if you gaffed the boot CD test but it's very clear to me the drive has expired, has a very dirty lens or is "dead".
