CD Drive Flies Open

It does it on its own only when the laptop is on. The model is Gateway Solo 1450 with 30GB hard drive running Windows XP Home Edition. From other forums I have followed advice in running TreeSize, EWIDO and HOUSECALL. I am led to believe this is a software problem caused by my having three partitions. My inclination is to make the entire drive a partition. However, the reading of disks in the drive seems intermitent. I hate to pay through the nose for another flimsy drive. Ideas, anyone?

These are flimsy 2 year lifespan drivess. At least... cheap

I replaced my last laptop CDRW drive (was only a 4X recorder, ugg!) for only 69 bucks. The new drive was a CDRW/DVD and records at 24X. MUCH better.

Given the prices we pay today, the lifespan is only a few years. If this bothers you, it's time to stop buying PCs?

I would settle for two years

Bob

Thanks for your reply. I would like to know where I could get a CD laptop drive for that price. I have had them last only a few months. My model is Gateway
Solo 1450, 30GB, running Windows XP Home. Gateway's drives are on a site by MundoCorp. The drives would cost $100 than what you quoted.

Try newegg.com

They have laptop drives that I've used many times. No the bezel is often the wrong color or the bezel shape is not the exact shape but for the price I just enjoy it.

I wonder if you have one of those Pentium 4 laptops. They tend to have quite short lifespans.

I will try newegg later. Thanks for the info. No, it is not Pentium 4, but Pentium III.

Problem Fixed

Bob

After spending most of this week backing up files and programs in partitions, I did a clean install of Windows XP and, once I receive a new CD drive, I should be O.K., as though I just received a new retro 2001 notebook. Thanks.

I Used Another Site

Bob

I was able to locate a drive from www.bixnet.com. If I remember correctly someone at a local Circuit City gave me the info and I kept it on record.
