This is what I did on my 7140.
Took both HDs and put them in my PC using adapters ($6) so they would work on the 40pin connector and used Nortons Ghost to clone the 6gb HD (master) to the new 40gb(slave) HD. Then put the 40gb into the laptop.
Open the CD drive and carfully clean the lens with a soft cloth and alcohol, it may just be dirty. John
Can't load wxp on portege 7140

In the BIOS setup for my toshiba portege 7140, I can't change the settings for the DVD-ROM/Docking station. I have a new hard drive that I can't install windows xp on, because the cd/dvd drive won't play (it starts spinning then stops). Even with my older hard drive with xp on it I couldn't get the drive to play/recognize any CDs.
I had bought a new larger hard drive (40 GB , as opposed to the older 6GB one) but can't install windows on it because I can't install from the CD. Even though I preloaded many of the setup files from floppy i need to complete the process from the XP install disk but I can't.
I am unable to find or change any of the bios settings to fix this.
