cd-drive and cd burner do not work

May 27, 2005 12:01PM PDT

I have a compaq 5441 running Windows 98 2nd edition. My cd and my cd burner will not work. I put cds in either of these devices and nothing happens. I go to my cd burning software and it says my drive is not available. In the "My computer" it shows that I have a removable drive F and G which are camera cards. My cd and cd burner are D and E and they are not listed here.
What did I do to get rid of them, or how do I get them back, I cant run windows restore because it is on cd.
Thanks

and see if they are listed there with yellow exclamation marks or if the IDE controllers have yellow marks........let us know.

Also, tell us if you have recently uninstalled Roxio EZCD Creator in order to use a different version or a different burning program completely.

Play detective...

1. What user did what, recently? Update?,scan and clean spyware-malware?, add/remove software? Have trouble with anything else on the PC? Physically add/remove hardware? Open the PC to do something? Bad shutdown..BSOD...other anomoly?
2. Open the PC and inspect...spring housecleaning, is the processor fan/heatsink looking quite clogged with dust? Dust prevalent elsewhere? Some motherboards will
reduce processor operation on overheat. Some may revert to a failsafe mode where some chipset operation may not be availible.
3. Some other component may have failed, partially failed, and caused W98SE to reconfigure devices, as shown in Device Manager. Sound card, modem, video, RAM, all are suspects. Do they all work ok?
4. Sometimes, a messed up shutdown will revert the W98SE to some previous state, or minimum load state, where device drivers have gotten corrupted or seem uninstalled. "Advanced" in Device Manager will show a white box "drive(x) is running in DOS compatibility mode".
5. There is always the question of virus-spy-malware-hacked.
