cd drive

Mar 25, 2004 6:55PM PST

i have a cd-rw and dvd drive fitted to my computer, the dvd drive works fine, and i can play my games on that drive. However the cd-rw will not function, it causes my computer to freeze up on several occasions, will not open or close and when it feels like it, it sits there with its orange and red light permanantly on. What should i do? i am running xp and now when i open the my computer icon, the drive isnt listed, is there a simple way of disabling this drive til i buy a new one, if so will my computer still run ok, can i use the dvd drive to play, watch cds etc etc, many thanks for your advice Des

Check Jumper On Back Of Drive
Mar 25, 2004 9:04PM PST

After disconnecting cables from bad drive, check jumper on remaining drive and make sure that it is set on Master.

A jumper is a very tiny tweezer size connector located on back side. Use tweezers or finger nails to reposition if necessary. It may already be set on Master, but if not, then change from Slave to Master.

Hi Des
Your computer will be running perfectly with the DVD Drive and the CD-RW unplugged(provided you did exactly as I told earlier). The only thing is that you cannot burn CD-Rs and CD-RWs.
Also an important thing when buying a new CD-RW go with a good brand like "LiteOn" or "Asus". Good Luck
