CD Burner Quit Working

Jan 12, 2008 5:42AM PST

I can't burn a CD because Vista has decided I need to remove my CD drive. The icon in the system tray that indicates when it is safe to remove hardware is telling me to remove my CD drive, which is a Samsung SP2504C. I've tried a system restore but unfortunately Vista won't let me go back far enough to get to a point before it told me to remove my CD drive - Drive D. For some reason it thinks it is a removable drive. I'm running Vista Home Premium on a Dell E521. Anyone out there have this problem and fixed it successfully? This is very frustrating. I've finally transferred all my files and pictures from my old computer and now I can't burn a CD to protect them. Help please.

The SP2504C is a hard disk.

And in some systems it will show up as removable. Not busted.

Tell a bit more. What CD recording software did you use?

I'm Using Roxio
Jan 13, 2008 8:22AM PST

Roxio is installed. Here's a couple things that might help. When I first got the computer AutoPlay opened whenever I inserted a CD or DVD; now that never happens. I can set the defaults in AutoPlay but it never does what it's supposed to do. Does Vista use Roxio whenever I click on "Burn CD"? Is the process to safely disconnect a removable drive, camera, etc., a Vista operation or is it part of Roxio?
One more thing, another item has shown up to be removed. It is my CD drive: TSST corp DVD+-RW TS-H653A SCSI CdRom Device - (E). That has been there before but I was able to stop it yesterday but then drive E totally disappeared and, of course, I wasn't able to even read a CD then. I did a restore and drive (E) reappeared.
So, now what do you think? I really appreciate your help.

Too configurable.

Sorry there is no set function here. But when you have issues with Roxio you check for updates then you uninstall Roxio and reinstall, update it and see if it works.

Is Roxio the Problem?
Jan 14, 2008 1:18AM PST

Is Roxio the problem? Does Roxio control the "remove hardware safely" function or is that function part of Vista? Can I shut down that function? Is it really necessary? I didn't have it on my old computer and I was able to connect and download pictures from my camera via USB. Also, will Windows burn a CD without Roxio or is an independent program necessary?

Try this...

"Is Roxio the problem? Does Roxio control the "remove hardware safely" function or is that function part of Vista?"

No. In fact this is an area we should ignore for now since it's a non-issue, non-cause of your CD recording issue. Some machines allow you to eject the hard disk. Moving on...

"Can I shut down that function? Is it really necessary? I didn't have it on my old computer and I was able to connect and download pictures from my camera via USB."

No. Leave it alone. Fix the REAL ISSUE.

"Also, will Windows burn a CD without Roxio or is an independent program necessary?"

It can but I find it too troublesome and has made CDRs that can't be used on other machines. I'm sticking with my answer to uninstall and reinstall Roxio. I'll also note that I like to use CDBURNERXP.

Okay I'll try to fix Roxio
Jan 14, 2008 3:53AM PST

Okay. I'll update and uninstall Roxio if the update doesn't fix the problem. So, are you telling me to ignore Vista telling me to remove the hard disk and the CdRom drive? Or should I be trying to find a way to fix that separately? Sorry to keep asking but I'm not getting the information I'm looking for. You'd be less frustrated with me if I was sitting across from you asking these questions. I appreciate your help.

Is Vista telling you to do this?

"ignore Vista telling me to remove the hard disk and the CdRom drive?"

Sorry, I was under the impression that you were asking Vista to do that. It's a fine distinction and one we need to be clear on.
