CD/burner problem.

Jan 2, 2005 5:44AM PST

Normally when I boot up, the cd/b flashes its light for a second and then switches off. Recently , but not all the time, the light stays on and my pc takes a long time to boot (3*normal). My pc works relatively normally but the light still flashes and I am unable to get the cd tray to come out so I can't use the cd/burner.

I am running winXP home and my modem is from the KM4M series, MSI/Mainboard for AMD Athlon XP/Athlon/Duron.

I have removed anything from the start up menu that might cause the problem, such as NeroCheck but it had no effect.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

That is a possibility Bob, but I am afraid it started to happen some time ago and so infrequently that I ignored it. I cannot remember when it first started, I think it was a few months ago.

Thanks

Then is the drive dead?

"I am unable to get the cd tray to come out so I can't use the cd/burner."

Unplug the IDE cable from the dead drive.

and the problem does not occur all the time, but has been occurring a liitle more frequently lately.

Wild guesses.

1. The power supply is browning out at just the wrong time. Typical for machines with just big enough supplies. The only test I do is to pull a 450Watt off the shelf and retest.

2. The CDRW is starting its ascent to silicon heaven and the test is to swap it out and see if the problem vanishes.

3. Rarely I find a CDRW Firmware update helps. Worth a shot.

NOTHING in you post gives me a clear indication so I'll guess.

My reading of the situation...

is that during the start up (when the green light continues to flash (as against a quick flash that stops) the cd player is not switching on automatically every time. If it were the light would stop flashing. Does it have to switch on at startup (readied for use) or can it be switched on after? There is nothing in the startup that is for the cd player, unless soundman.exe has something to do with it.
