General discussion

CCleaner is USELESS

Jan 10, 2006 3:25PM PST

You can eliminate the symptoms with CCleaner, but can't find the cure.

In other words, it cleans your system thoroughly. But then ,one minute later after your first Google search you have your browser redirect to unwanted, privacy-stealing shopping sites.

Hmm...... CCleaner is VERY GOOD for.........

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization and privacy tool. It removes unused files from your system - allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history.

Cleans the following:

Internet Explorer
Temporary files, URL history, cookies, Autocomplete form history, index.dat.

Firefox
Temporary files, URL history, cookies, download history.

Windows
Recycle Bin, Recent Documents, Temporary files and Log files.

Registry cleaner
Advanced features to remove unused and old entries, including File Extensions, ActiveX Controls, ClassIDs, ProgIDs, Uninstallers, Shared DLLs, Fonts, Help Files, Application Paths, Icons, Invalid Shortcuts and more... also comes with a comprehensive backup feature.

Third-party applications
Removes temp files and recent file lists (MRUs) from many apps including Opera, Media Player, eMule, Kazaa, Google Toolbar, Netscape, MS Office, Nero, Adobe Acrobat, WinRAR, WinAce, WinZip and many more...

I don't know how you are browsing, but I never had the problems you are having. I assume, you have a HIJACKER on your computer.

I would suggest, try:

Download ewido security suite here: http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install and update it.

Add the install instructions for Ewido:
1. When installing, under ''Additional Options'' uncheck ''Install background guard'' and ''Install scan via context menu''.
2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning ''Database could not be found!''. Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display ''Update successful'')
5. Exit Ewido.

Hi! CCleanerIs Not Meant to Remove Browser Hijack......
Jan 10, 2006 4:01PM PST

/redirects etc. It will remove them IF they're hiding inside one of the areas checked for cleaning. It is a program designed to remove the constant build-up which is accumulated every time you do anything on or off the net.
NOTE: If you have a Virus/Trojan/Adware etc problem. I suggest you run CCleaner FIRST to remove all this excess baggage so Scanners will find it easier to do their work.
ALSO: In CCleaner, under options>advanced tab there's a check box "only remove temp files older than 48 hours". This is default to prevent auto removal of components that reside there after new program installs which may be needed again in 1st 24 hours. Since some of these bad things MAY also land and try to hide there, it is a good idea to uncheck that box before cleaning as your problem probably landed recently. Once done you can re-check box for normal use.
I'm sorry if you thought CCleaner was a Scanner. There IS a scanner called "The Cleaner" & perhaps you confused the 2??
I'm sure someone more expert than I will be by soon and jump in (hopefully) but before they do you should note the statement in RED at top of posting area requesting system info including, but not limited to:OS, patch level, Brand of machine, AV & updated def to when?, other scanners or protective programs you have on machine( i.e.: Spybot S&D, AdawareSE from Lavasoft, perhaps popup blocker?, and how current the defs for those, what they have found if you have scanned recently). Note: Important you SPELL those program names EXACTLY w/version# as many ROGUE programs spell themselves VERY closely to real thing to confuse and make money. Many of those Rogues actually install many of the kind of problems you mention. Here is a link to a post w/ link at top listing these Rogues & extensive list of legit, reputable, free scanner programs you can download (most are free, some have free trial period) to help you over come your problems.
