CCleaner index.dat

Jan 8, 2006 11:50PM PST

I was thinking about downloading CCleaner but have some questions. I read how Cleanup caused problems because it deleted index.dat files but when I go to ccleaner.com and read about it, it also deletes index.dat files, am I reading this wrong? In other words I read that Cleanup was not good to download but CCleaner was ok but it looks like both delete the index.dat file, what gives? Also is the ccleaner.com the right site to download this or is this the wrong program I am looking at? If this is wrong what is it that people are using? Thanks slybo

Yes CCleaner does remove the index.dat files, well most of them.

I have not encountered a problem with this function, seems windows just builds a new one.

Never tried Cleanup.

I have never tried Cleanup either although I know people that use it and like it. I have been deleting those files for over a year with CCleaner and have never had a problem with it. Here is a tutorial for CCleaner.

more info
Jan 9, 2006 1:01AM PST

I thought I would give some more information on why I was concerned. On the aol spyware board there is a thread about this but with no clear answer, here is the link http://messageboards.aol.com/aol/en_us/articles.php?boardId=535948&articleId=20694&func=6&channel=Computers+%26+Electronics&filterRead=false&filterHidden=true&filterUnhidden=false

On the second page of the thread is this info

CleanUp! , if run, as downloaded, will delete this file :

C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\OfflineCache\index.dat

Once this file is deleted, (MS)Sysinfo becomes disabled, and/or parts of Help & Support behave differently

I did a search and I have this file. So this was my concern. Thanks for the replys and if anyone has anymore information it would be appreciated. slybo

That's possibly true but can't say for sure.

I saw a similar problem on this same exact problem on another forum but it seemed to be related to defragging.

CCleaner & Cleanup
Jan 9, 2006 2:03AM PST

I use CCleaner and Steven Goulds CleanUp regularly and have never had any problems. Sometimes if I use both, one after the other, which I do after extensive surfing and downloading, My quick launch toolbar needs to be rechecked. No biggy.

Used For Long Time. Never a Problem. Great! Heres Another...

link you may have missed. It takes you into a help section listing of what each item with a check box is/does. Print it out for reference when deciding on what to remove. I don't clean every item possible.
Note the area for saving cookies you don't want to delete (membership logins etc).
Also note under options >advanced to tick the box on "Only delete temp files older than 48 hours". If you should( in future) get a Virus/trojan/malware infection, it's important to go and UNCHECK that box before doing a cleaning (Do FIRST,followed by all other scan/removals) so problem doesn't hide there. After clean, re-check the box.
I run CCleaner after each time I leave net (to get rid of baddies & reduce load on system) AND before I go on to the net(to get rid of any info possible about what's been used on computer that might otherwise find it's way to a site on net: Index.dat etc.).Enjoy! Grin
