Question

CCleaner

Jun 23, 2012 4:19AM PDT

Any suggestions on how to safely set up CCleaner? I want to be sure important files or settings aren't deleted.

Also, "system restore " is not working. Any suggestions?

I have Dell Dimension 5100, Windows XP Professional.

CCleaner

Just use stock settings, do not change anything!

And stay away from CCleaner's Registry scanner option. It is fairly benign compared to the scam registry cleaners around, but even so, the registry does not want cleaning.

One thing about CCleaner's stock settings; when you run analyse and then run the cleaner, it will delete all your cookies. If you need to preserve any cookies, eg web site login cookies, visit Options > Cookies before running the analyser to save those cookies.

I can't say much about System Restore with so few details given. except we know that Norton's Security disables it in favor of it's own protected files option.

All of the boxes are checked on the Registry Cleaner option. Should I uncheck them all??

I have had Norton 360 for 2 years now. If Norton is the cause, what info would you need ?

Thanks!

YOUR CHOICE.

You can skip the registry cleaner if you wish. I don't use that part.

Registry option

Just ignore the Registry option of CCleaner.

When you run a scan on CCleaner's main page, the Cleaner > Analyze, that scan doesn't touch the registry scanner at all. The registry scanner is separate, so we recommend not to use that.

In fact like I said, CCleaner's registry scanner is quite benign and running the registry scan won't do any harm at all. It is the next step, the "Fix selected issues", which I never use, even though it only finds keys that are orphaned.

For example, I've just run my CCleaner registry scan and most of the items it found looked innocent enough, except 4 entries like this;

"Invalid firewall rule" then some details.

I don't know enough to decide whether it is safe to delete those so I am leaving the whole scan alone and ignoring any registry entries.

Your System Restore;

Here is how to turn off Norton's "Tamper Protection" option;

I'm glad you got System Restore back. It has defeated many here who were unaware that Norton disables it.

And CCleaner is a good little utility.

Thanks for reporting back.
