cat 5 vs rg 59

Sep 8, 2005 10:32AM PDT

Which would perform better in a network ? A long section of rg 59 to the cable modem and a short section of cat 5 to the router or a short section of rg 59 to the modem and a long section of cat 5 to the router. I'm not really looking at great distances something around 3'min to about 20' max.

You are well within the distance limits....

for ethernet cable <100 meters. You will see no difference in either scenario. But RG6 will be a better conduit for your cable signal.

Thanks I was just wondering, I'm rearranging my desk space and was thinking about moving my modem closer to where it splits off of the main cable.

The only issue I have seen develop....

is when a coaxial cable is split too many times before it reaches a modem. The signal carried by that cable gets also gets split leaving you with less bandwidth at the modem. I have had a cable installer run a single line from the outside junction box directly to the modem, the rest to the TVs.
