Casio Ex-Z750 screen cracked on the inside!

Jul 9, 2005 12:32PM PDT

About three days out of the box, I took my Ex-Z750 out of its padded case and the screen was cracked - only on the inside, the surface isn't the least bit dented or scratched. There is a big black splotch, which is visible when the screen is off, and cracks seperate the screen into three parts, only the bottom of which show the image.
I've babied this camera, and it has not been subjected to any shocks, even in the case. I suspect it happened when it was in my pocket, in loose pants and I didn't bump into anything. What the heck? I wrote to Casio and BHPhoto last night, and assume they'll get back to me this week. Does anyone know what might have happened, or have any advice in how I should deal with the seller and manufacturer? This camera cost a week's rent to begin with, and I *was* thrilled with it.

Sometimes heat makes LCDs crack from the inside. Did you leave it in the car maybe? Even if you did not I have seen this on other things like PSPs and it should have come with some type of manufacturer's warranty, and they should be able to fix it or replace it for you.

That's reassuring, although depressing too that it's so fragile. Still, I'm glad there's an explanation that doesn't make it my fault! I did not leave it in a car, it's been in an air conditioned house except for when I've had it out using it. With the warrenty, are they likely to make me pay for anything but shipping?

Should be free of charge...

To me it sounds like it was a manufacturer's defect, possibly an air bubble trapped in the LCD. Such an occurrance is rare, but it can cause the LCD to become very brittle, and thus fracture upon the slightest bump.

The warrenty should discuss procedures for notifying them, shipping, etc. Once they receive it, they will inspect it for physical damages to determine who pays for its repair/replacement. Since it is obvious that you didn't drop-kick it or otherwise subject it to unusual use/abuse, they will write it off and either repair it or replace it, at their discression. I've had some experience with Casio, and they seem pretty fair, and will ''do the right thing.'' (Although there are some unreputable companies who will claim you purposely damaged it even though it was manufacturer defect...yes, I've had it happen.)

Just put in a request for repair (by calling 1-800-435-7732 or 1-800-962-2746) and they'll guide you through the process. Some companies, such as HP, will even send you a pre-paid shipping box and materials the next day for quick, safe delivery through UPS or Fedex.

Hope this helps, and good luck.
John

Thats what I was worried about, that they would think I did it. That's why I'm really glad the outside of the screen is unmarred, it would have to be very delicate sabotage on my part.

BH Photo replaced it, even paid for shipping back to them

So all I lost was some time.
