Card not initialized problem!

Oct 27, 2004 11:54AM PDT

Hi,

I am wondering if someone can help me here. I have a Fujifilm fine pix 2600 digital camera. I can't take pictures, download pictures etc..I get an error "!CARD NOT INITIALIZED" What does this mean? Is my camera broken? or is it the card? Is there any way to fix this? I would appreciate if someone can help me here.

Thanks
Rachel

The message is trying to tell you that you need to format the card. The owners manual will have "how to format" information for your camera.

If you cannot format the card it could be the card or the camera. The only way to know for sure is to use another card.

Any card should be formatted in the camera before trying to use it for photos.
If the card comes already formatted, it should still be formatted in the camera before trying to use it for photos.

Thanks for your help!

This is not a new card. I have taken pictures already with this camera and card. It just happened all of a sudden. Do you still think I will need to re-format the card?

Unexplainable things happen sometimes.

If you have photos on the card that you want to recover, take the card to your local WalMart photo department and ask them to see if they can copy them to a CD. Another person on this forum did this and their photo department service was able to copy the files. I believe the charge was about $5

After that, format the card.

I have the same camera. To format the card, turn the top dial to the center position (to view pictures). Turn the camera on. Press the menu/OK botton.

It bring up a choice of:
Erase
Format
All Frames
Frame

Use the toggle (that zooms in and out when taking pictures) to select Format, then press the menu/OK button.

Enjoy!

Use the right arrow to get the "options" menu, use the up arrow (zoom in button) to select "set-up", press "menu/ok". Use the down arrow to select "format" on the menu, then (making sure you have selected "OK" on the options available on that screen) click "menu/ok".

I am ready to go on a family trip and my camera also read "card not initialized". I thought I was going to have to buy a new camera. I thought before I spend money I don't have, I would Google my problem and see if I could find any help. Praise the Lord a link came up with your technical assistance. It took me seconds to fix the problem! Thank you again for your kindness!

Instead of explaining why my card was not intializing, you gave me the solution as to how to correct the problem. Thanks again.

I really appreciate that people take the time to help on here. I had my camera with the same problem. It wasn't the same camera but I found the format function and it WORKS now! Yeah, now the only problem with it is that even new batteries say they are low and it always turns off on me. Not to mention that in order to put the pictures on my computer I have to go into my computer find the camera open its folder then cut them from the camera and paste them to my pictures. Now, if only I could fix that!

Sounds like
Jul 6, 2008 11:11PM PDT

It sounds like you formatted the card with your computer.
That is a no no.

You need to format the card with the format command in your camera.

.........

You may be able to recover the card:

Put the card in your computer card reader and delete every file and folder you find on the card.

Put the card back in your camera and get out your Camera User Manual.
Look in the index for the word "format".
Read how to use the camera format command.
Format the card using the camera's format command.
Then there is a good chance that the card will work properly in your camera.
