capturing VHS

I'm using an ATI tv wonder pro capture device. It seems to do the job, problem is it saves the file with an .WMV extension. I want to use PROSHOW GOLD software to edit the film and burn to Video CD but proshow won't accept it because of the extension. any ideas are needed.

It looks like it probably offers several formats into which

material can be captured. You say WMA is one, and ATI's web site says mpeg2 is another. I'm guessing you have an initialization function to set up channels, etc. Within these initialization menus, you should find an option regarding the capture format which will be used. Change that to a more acceptable format.

I dont know if I posted this already or not but I'll do it again. I don't know that much about computers, and I'm not sure what channels are. I have uninstalled and re installed the software that came with the hardware several times and nowhere do I see any place where I can set up options. their is'nt even an icon for this program. the only way i can capture video is through windows movie maker or windows multimedia and they both save their files with an .WMV extension. I'm lost. Larry

Based on looking at ATI's website, it certainly looks like

it includes software. When I say 'channel', I mean TV channel. Does the ATI card have a place to connect a TV antenna or cable? If so, it has a tuner. If it has a tuner, it needs to run through an initialization sequence to identify the TV channels that it receives a signal for. It is this initialization function that will contain choices such as what format is used to record data.

My suggestion is to contact ATI technical support, or, better, go to their web site, and look for their list of frequently asked questions and some sort of knowledge base. If that doesn't work, contact tech support and have them walk you through the process of setting up the card.
