cant use verbatin external storage hard drive

hi all.have used the memory storage unit for about a year.but since recently downloading avg tune up,it dosnt appear as an option,when I try to send stuff to it.seems a bit of a coincidence.computer is a pavilion,weeks ago updated to 10,from 8,wished I hadn't,understand this version less than the 8.i have little understanding of computers.hope someone can help,regards john.

Does this unit work if you plug it into another machine?
Can you browse around and see files?

What happens if you plug in something like a usb stick to your machine.
Does it show as a 'send to' device?

Hi John,

You can try below steps to diagnose the problem:

1) See if same external HDD works on another OS/ computer or not.
2) When you connect same HDD to your system check for any popup notification.
3) Does other USB devices work on same USB port/ try different USB ports.
4) Look for any error in Device Manager under Universal Serial Bus controller.
5) If HDD works on other system, check for Motherboard Chipset drivers and install it.
