There are many many reasons for this.

This one has many prior discussions. You must go over your email settings or have someone do it for you. In some cases it happens when you are away from "home." For example, many ISPs allow you to only send when you are on their network.

the "send server" settings on the working systems with the w8 system. Since w8 is latest system, it's likely you set it up using non valid older non secure settings from some webpage instead of consulting your other computers which had been updated to the newer security settings. Typical is a different port setting than the previously used port 25, many now being 465, 587, 2525, etc.

The good thing about using Thunderbird is it usually automatically puts the correct port at the time you set it up, because it checks for the most common settings first for the site used.
